Understanding Sensory Overload and "Shutdown".
In neurodivergent conditions such as autism or ADHD, "shutdown" (or internal collapse) is often misunderstood by those around the person, who may perceive it as sulking or ordinary tiredness. Medically, it is an involuntary response of the autonomic nervous system to an overload of sensory or emotional information.
Polyvagal Theory and the Parasympathetic Nervous System
According to the work of Dr. Stephen Porges (Polyvagal Theory), when the primitive brain (the amygdala) detects a threat — which for a neurodivergent brain can be simply an excess of noise or light — it activates the sympathetic system (fight or flight, "meltdown"). But if the overload continues and fleeing is not possible, the dorsal parasympathetic system takes over: this is "freezing" or "shutdown."
During this phase, the body drastically reduces its energy expenditure. Heart rate may drop, the ability to process language collapses, and speech becomes extremely difficult or even impossible (selective mutism).
